Addictions and Interventions

Addiction is a word that is underused just as much as it is overused. For example, people can say they have an addiction to things they generally just enjoy a lot like ice cream or another person. But addiction is actually a disease, a chemical or behavioral dependence on a substance, not just a something a person really enjoys. On the other hand a lot of times people undermine their addiction, by saying that they are in complete control of their behavior. Whether it is alcohol abuse or an eating disorder, people will try to pass it off as something insignificant. People need to understand that addiction is not something to be joked about, and not something that should be ignored.

Addiction really occurs when people have an uncontrollable unhealthy dependency on something despite all the negative effects it has brought to their lives in many ways.  An answer to this unhealthy and dangerous lifestyle is intervention. Intervention is when the people close to the person displaying this behavior, choose to step in and say enough is enough. This may be a very difficult decision to make, but at this point the person dealing with an addiction is no longer thinking and acting rationally and has lost control over their disease. If nothing is done there is a possibility that person can hurt themselves and others around them.

Intervention is not just for drug addictions or alcohol but can be for any type of addiction or mental disorder. There is gambling intervention, sex addiction intervention or any other kind of behavioral addiction intervention. There is also intervention for eating disorders, self-harm, and other mental health issues that have taken over a person’s life for the worse.

How Much Should Rehab Cost?

Money | Photo: 401K /Flickr/Creative Commons License

Well, the short answer is that not going to rehab may cost you your life.

I think that’s the whole contrast of options that makes it so that people sometimes pay lot of money to get well.

I had one friend who looked at low cost  / affordable rehab centers when she needed to get heroin rehabilitation.  (Mom, get off my blog, yes, I have friends who sometimes use drugs recreationally while sniffing paint fumes.)

My mom sometimes likes to read my blog.

Anyway.  She got good treatment.  She didn’t have a suite to herself, or a view of the coast, and they didn’t bring her freshly baked croissants, but the counselor she saw was this extremely intuitive, highly trained young thing, just getting her start, but properly licensed, etc.  They really connected and she was able to make a lot of progress in just a month.  It’s like — if you have a headache, you might not need to get that shiny Advil tablet that has two-tone color treatment and a “gel coating” — you might need 600 mg of Ibuprofen in the form of a white tablet with no branding.

I love my Advil.  So, I’m not advocating that people should do without what they like, or even their more demanding preferences.  I just think it’s important to realize quality is available at all different echelons of the marketplace.

Don’t think that you can’t get care just because you’re not richy rich.  Also, don’t think that you can’t get care because you don’t have good insurance.  Did you ever try to make lemonade with one hand?  That’s what it’s like for most people dealing with insurance.  What you need is a juicer.  Which is  – a professional to help you navigate the red-tape.

I hope this gives you hope.  And inspires you to go to crack rehab.

Rehabs in California Are Also A Dime Proposition

Hey, back again.  I know.  Two days in a row.  Here’s the topic inside the larger topic of Rehabs in California.

What is are the popular memes operating in drug rehab marketing today?

  1. Well, dual diagnosis, certainly.  This is warranted.  The basic idea here is that if you have a mental health issue that you’re coping with by drinking a lot — an alcohol detox isn’t going to be enough.
  2. Customized, individual care.  This is also warranted.  The idea here is that. . .we are individuals.  I like Aspirin, you like Ibuprofen.  But extrapolated.  Ha.
  3. Holistic rehab services — like yoga, meditation — working with the idea that you’re a person with a range of physical, spiritual and emotional needs that should be addressed.  Also fair.

Any alcohol outpatient treatment program will offer the above three items on their ticket, or should I say, menu of services.  Long term rehabs, will also promote more of the same.  My question for you all, dear readers, is how do you know when a facility is really about patient care and doing good work?

Buzzwords really aren’t very demanding of anyone.  Buzz, buzz, big deal.

How about this list of three?

  1. Accreditation and licensed medical staff.
  2. Guarantees of effectiveness (you can come back if you relapse within x amount of time). . .
  3. A well structured, well-run program that has client care covered in a comprehensive way, such that they are also seeking to address things like insurance coverage on behalf of the patient.

Look for these things and you will find that quality of treatment you’re looking for.  I will have more things to say, so check back soon.

Social Media Companies for Los Angeles Rehab Marketing – Considerations

Social media companies in Los Angeles are a dime a dozen.  That’s a glib thing to say, isn’t it? –but I’m saying it more for effect than anything else.  Social media companies are NOT a dime a dozen.  You can’t get a dozen of anything for ten cents.  Look around, you’ll see that I”m not fooling.

So the key thing you’re looking for with managed search engine marketing services or any other type of search engine optimization consulting, is not just a question of what keywords you’re going to use.  It’s more a question of who is going to look those words up for you and understand your brand and business in such a way so that they enter the minds of prospective clients with your interests in tow.  The days of hiring someone to spam someone else’s blogs are over.  You need to work with REAL people with whom you actually have a good communication channel and work-flow.  Yo.  Otherwise, the nuances involved in having a strong online presence will be neglected and then you’ll have to give up your house and go back to rehab.

Social marketing optimization is in the end all about people and the very process and people involved in handling this for your business are critical to the success of your efforts, and return on money and time spent.  I think that’s something that makes me laugh about marketers.  When you’re trying to sell something to someone, the best way to go about it is to know that what they’re looking for is whatever they believe is good for them.  If you sell them that, you’ve made a friend and you’ve done good work.  If you sell them less, you’re just a hack.

Help For Bulimia After Thanksgiving

There’s help for bulimia after Thanksgiving.  You think I’m being facetious, but actually there’s a logic behind it.

Every year, once a year people gather to express gratitude for each other and for their lives.  When you have just participated in a family feast and the only thing you can think about is how you want to get away from everyone and purge, you are suffering from what eating disorder specialists would call acute symptoms of a condition called bulimia. Eating Disorder Recovery  is no easy thing but it something than can take place gradually once it is set in motion.

First you come to a place where you know that something is wrong.  It might be that all your friends and family know it first.  But at some point, it is critical that you confront reality no matter what your perceptions might be telling you.  Then you need to find people to help you get better.  It may require some counseling and mental health assessment, close survey of family dynamics, but with guidance and sensitivity a therapist may be of great help when one is faced with the necessity of remaking an identity.  A way of being.  That’s the part that really gets me.

An eating disorder starts off as a solution to a problem, usually one involving a lack of control or influence over factors regarded as emotionally / psychically taxing.  If you can’t control whether someone loves you back, if you can’t be more intelligent than you are, if you are constantly being inpinged upon by all the conditions of your life, the one thing you can control is what you put in your mouth and feed your body.  The discovery of this is a bit of a revelation.  You can pick what you consume and if you don’t consume much, you’ll look better in your clothes.  And it i this sad process of deduction that gets things started in the first place.

Executive Intervention

Those who understand recovery as a process understand that pre-recovery and post-recovery are in fact part of the process and should be just as important. Pre-recovery can be considered the executive intervention part of the whole recovery process. The intervention process should be performed very seriously and very calmly because this is the first step for many addicts. The intervention is not meant to scare them or break them, it is meant to let them know, this is where your addiction stop and your sobriety begins. Many treatment centers offer intervention services so you do not have to plan one on your own. The intervention is critical so you want to perform the best way you can with as much guidance and information you can get.

When someone is in treatment they are surrounded by medical staff, addiction specialist, professional counselors and other trained staff. They are in very good hands and are in the safest environment for their state of being. Once they complete their entire treatment program and are ready to return home starts another phase of recovery. Post-recovery can be more difficult for some and it is not uncommon for someone who did great through treatment to experience a relapse in post recovery.

It may not be the case that the patient was not ready to be back home or that they were not all the way recovered, they just may have been overwhelmed. It is very difficult to stay on track after recovery and that is why some people hire a type of recovery assistant like a sober coach or sober buddy. These people can help a patient focus on his long-term recovery goals and not succumb to any addictive behaviors or pressures.

Effective Treatment for Dual Diagnosis

For those suffering from both a mental illness and an addiction to drugs or alcohol presents a challenge for health professionals.  Because the symptoms of addiction overlap with those of mental illness, treatment is complicated and challenging to diagnose.  Complete treatment takes time and great care due to the delicate nature of the individual.

Because these individuals have a mental imbalance, getting compliance from the patient to the rules and regulations of a standard drug rehabilitation program is very difficult.  It becomes hard to get them to take their medications, attend counseling or other basic necessities associated with success in a rehabilitation program.

The most successful approach in treating the dual diagnosis patient is an integrated center for dual diagnosis.  They are able to treat all aspects of the illnesses in a single location.
Mental health professionals and addiction rehabilitation counselors work together in these programs to provide well-rounded care that encompasses everything involved in the diagnosis.

There is a family component to successful treatment for those suffering from dual diagnosis.  The family must be patient but more importantly they must stop any enabling actions that support poor behavior by the patient or substance abuse.

Sovereign Health Group is center for dual diagnosis that is aware of the challenges experienced by those facing mental health and substance abuse issues.  Accurately diagnosing the condition is the first step to treatment.  Whether it is for themselves or a loved one, all programs are tailored individually to meet the needs the individuals’ needs.  Contact Sovereign Health Group to see how they can assist.

John’s Story

John had a very hard time growing up, he was always the kid that everybody called the spaz. He was all over the place all the time, because of this he was put on various different medications while growing up. It was discovered that John was suffering from a mental illness when he was 14. He was medicated for this illness for a few years, but when he found alcohol he started to slack with his medication. There were periods when he wouldn’t take his medication for up to a week and a totally new person would come out. It was like releasing the beast! He would go on crazy drug binges that lasted until somebody got him back on his medication.

When John was on his medication he could hold his life together, or at least it appeared that way. He was still drinking a lot while he was on his medication, but he was not destroying his life or the lives of the people around him. When John was 21 he entered a dual diagnosis rehab that claimed they could solve his addiction problems and teach him the benefits of staying on his medication. John liked the place he went to and ended up staying for almost 6 months. When I ran into John a couple months after he left this rehab center he looked more stable than I had ever seen him.

When running into John we decided to get some coffee, I had never seen him able to sit still and have normal conversation like we did that day. He couldn’t stop talking about how the dual diagnosis rehab he went to saved his life. He truly believed that he was doomed before he entered this facility. It was great to see John doing so good.

The Detox Process

There are many misconceptions about the detoxification process, but really a detox aims to improve your health and not be painful. There are many types of a detox that people can do; it does not always have to do with drugs or alcohol. People detox their bodies so they can feel better in more ways than one. People can detox from certain foods that are bad for their body, or detox to clean internal parts of their body like the colon or intestines.

With a detox for drugs and alcohol, the same idea of getting rid of all the toxins and generally giving the body a clean fresh palette is used. There are also different types of drugs detox like a thc detox, a meth detox, a oxycontin detox and so much more. Usually patients receive a detox before they start drug treatment. Patients would check into their rehabilitation facility and before anything go through the detox process. They do not just do this to get it over with; it actually has a significant purpose for being the first step in getting clean.

Many treatment specialist believe that ridding the body of any leftover toxins or residue of the drug they are addicted to can help them focus on treatment. Since their body is clean physically, they are mentally able to focus on treatment. Also the detox process is aimed at helping with any type of withdrawal discomfort some drugs can cause. A weed detox aims at getting their systems clear and helping them focus on really getting clean. A meth detox is more aimed at relieving those painful withdrawal symptoms that can occur.

Eating Disorders and Drug Addictions

Eating disorders may seem like a more recent dilemma in our society, however eating disorders have caused struggles in the lives of many Americans for generations. Disordered eating can often be accompanied by a variety of mental conditions. The most common condition that comes along with the common eating disorders is major depression. Eating disorders develop due to body image issues and low self-esteem. The negativity that accompanies eating disorders is usually dealt with by the use of harmful substances. Developing an addiction along with an eating disorder is a dual diagnosis and must be treated professionally at a dual diagnosis treatment center.

Some of the most common reasons for developing a body image issue is connected to our society’s addiction to the media and the negative affect it has on our self image as a whole. Media outlets such as television, magazines, and movies are responsible for the pressure that is put on people, especially young women, to stay thin and skinny. Our countries media is responsible for creating idealistic values and extreme versions of what the idea of what beauty is. A dual diagnosis treatment center knows the correct way to treat these issues that come along with drug addictions that develop as a result of common eating disorders.
