Heroin addiction is affecting more and more people, which is another reason the substance is extremely dangerous. There are many reasons why someone may start using heroin. It is astonishing the number of individuals who have an emotional condition as well as a substance abuse problem. For example, if someone is suffering from a schizoaffective disorder they may start using heroin as a means of coping with their emotional strife. Heroin is an opiate, which is classified as a depressant. When injected into the system there is a rush of euphoria surges through the body. Depending on how much is taken; the substance can actually render someone unconscious. The effects of the substance wear off relatively quickly, leaving the addict craving more in order to find their high again.

Do research about specific programs and treatment plans by going into a center or talking to a specialist. Treating a dual disorder is complicated because the patient is not only addressing their emotional issues, but their substance abuse issues too. If you or a loved on are suffering form schizophrenia or a heroin addiction, talk to a medical professional immediately. That way the patient can receive schizophrenia treatment as well as address their substance abuse problems. It is important to remember that you are not alone! Finding a treatment center is a great idea because the patient is able to meet others who are going through a similar situation. This is beneficial because if the patient has a moment of weakness outside of rehab they will have a support system to call. Help is out there!
